From serifpublishing, supposedly we can save the environment simply by using a black google. Plus it looks pretty cool.

Relax Magazine

Possibly my favourite magazine of all time - despite not being able to read any of it - Relax covered everything I liked. The only magazine I could compare it to would be Grand Royal magazine and sadly neither are with us any more. I’d guess you could classify them both as lifestyle magazines, everything from art, fashion, music through to more esoteric subjects like Mos Burger and a regular section on “kakutougi” (what the Japanese call mixed martial arts events and disciplines like the UFC). I found a good little archive of a few Relax covers at nmca that probably sums up the wide range of things that it covered. I’ve managed to pick up around ten or so issues, when I have time i’ll get around to scanning some pages, possibly alongside some covers from Grand Royal as I have access to every issue.

Following a comment yesterday that corrected me mislabelling a video as being by Parra, I’ve just found a little promo video by So-Me for a compilation CD. The video is in a similar vein as the other video but featuring record covers rather than t-shirts.

Cows n Carbon

A bit of a wander off topic here from what I’ve normally been covering on my blog now, I’ve been thinking a lot recently on the environmental impact that cows are having. One recent tidbit of information I read recently said that around 2lbs of beef has the same carbon footprint as driving a family car for 150 miles at 50mph. This is due to the amount of methane produced by the cow, transportation, slaughtering, refrigeration etc etc. Apparently, around 20% of the worlds pollution is created by cows. I was talking about this with a friend yesterday and we agreed that this figure is useless without having a comparison to other animals. Does a cow produce more pollution than a pig per lb of meat? I don’t really drink milk (I never have done, I had to have flavoured milk as a baby even) but I do really like a steak. I’m not massively eco but I don’t drive, don’t fly much and I try to be a little bit green, are all these things pointless if I have a steak every so often?

Global Cities at Tate Modern

Global Cities looks at the changing faces of ten dynamic international cities: Cairo, Istanbul, Johannesburg, London, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Mumbai, São Paulo, Shanghai and Tokyo.”

I went to see this exhibition in the turbine hall at Tate Modern today, one of the better ones they’ve hosted I felt, informative, interesting and engaging. I didn’t have my camera with me so I’m afraid you’ll have to make do with the few photos I took on my phone camera. I also visited the Design Museum because i’d read they had an exhibition on Helvetica. What they actually had was approx 12 framed prints in their cafe…

One of the most interesting pieces visually was a large map made up of famous landmarks from some of the cities featured in the exhibition, recreated out of weird objects. One of my favourites was Canary Wharf made out of biscuits.

These were the outlines of four cities showing where their population was distributed. An interesting piece of information that I didn’t know before was that London isn’t at it’s peak, population wise. The peak was reached (if I remember correctly) at around 1939 at approx 1 million higher than today.

The name of David Shrigley will be very familiar to many people but personally I hadn’t really seen anything of his apart from his drawings. Computerlove made me take a closer look at his website by posting the below image. I strongly recommend you go here and check it out for yourself.
