Tatami “Crazy” gi design competition

This is slightly off topic from the majority of my blog but I’ve been training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu now since about 2000 and in one of the few crossover moments between my interest in martial arts, and my interest in illustration I have been shortlisted for the Tatami Fightwear “Crazy” gi design competition. If I get the most “likes” for my design then my gi will be custom made for me for free!

If you feel like doing me a favour, please go here and “like” my design!

Spec Work and Competitions

Any illustrator/designer will know the pitfalls of spec work, working for free for the possibility of “winning” a competition to have their design used. They’re all over the place and in general if you’re picked then it will have been worth the effort, if you’re not picked then it’s just a waste of time. I came across a competition today to design a t-shirt for “X-Large” a label that I used to respect quite a lot and that in the past has used designs by Geoff McFetridge amongst others. The competition has the normal provisos that all designs will be the property of X-Large etc etc but what struck me was how bad the “prizes” were. Three runners up win

  • A free T-Shirt with the winning design.
  • A $25 Gift Certificate to XLarge.com.

And the winner wins

  • Worldwide recognition for designing an official XLarge T-shirt.
  • 5 free T-Shirts with the design to show off.
  • $100 Gift Certificate to XLarge.com.

Doesn’t that strike anyone as quite bad? Add to that their track record for these competitions, they held one in the past that appears to have had no winners at all and I’d suggest that entering is probably a waste of time.

Anyway, if you still want to enter you can do so here.

I just finished the layout for a fanzine/book that I art directed and designed called Typology. The illustrations were produced by Hannah Buck, Steph Hosmer, James Cunninghame Graham and myself.

Click the image to view a pdf of Typology, hard copies will be produced very soon for around £10.

Another site that everyone must know by now but here it is for the few who don’t, one of my favourite sites. The Sartorialist documents “ordinary” people’s fashion. Click here.

Kitsune Noir have posted up some scans of the renowned type foundry House Industries look book that showcases many of their typefaces. I’ve been a fan of House for ages, particularly their fashion label House 33, which used to have a lavishly appointed shop around the corner from where I used to work in Soho. Check the pictures out here and check House’s site here.
