I finished a “quick” illustration yesterday about the Iran elections.

I now have a tumblr page, I’m probably going to be posting a lot of the stuff I used to post on this blog on there instead and keep the blog as a process/portfolio blog.
I got a call from Daniel Stacey at the ever excellent magazine “Bad Idea” to ask if I’d do a black and white, Bad Idea themed illustration for the cover of Don’t Panic (the free monthly flyer pack). Of course I said yes, the theme was to be the “credit crunch” and was to feature the last issue of the magazine. Here’s what we eventually ended up with. Gordon Brown reading the magazine.

Any illustrator/designer will know the pitfalls of spec work, working for free for the possibility of “winning” a competition to have their design used. They’re all over the place and in general if you’re picked then it will have been worth the effort, if you’re not picked then it’s just a waste of time. I came across a competition today to design a t-shirt for “X-Large” a label that I used to respect quite a lot and that in the past has used designs by Geoff McFetridge amongst others. The competition has the normal provisos that all designs will be the property of X-Large etc etc but what struck me was how bad the “prizes” were. Three runners up win
- A free T-Shirt with the winning design.
- A $25 Gift Certificate to XLarge.com.
And the winner wins
- Worldwide recognition for designing an official XLarge T-shirt.
- 5 free T-Shirts with the design to show off.
- $100 Gift Certificate to XLarge.com.
Doesn’t that strike anyone as quite bad? Add to that their track record for these competitions, they held one in the past that appears to have had no winners at all and I’d suggest that entering is probably a waste of time.
Anyway, if you still want to enter you can do so here.
